About Groupon:
Groupon is an e-commerce marketplace that connects subscribers with local merchants by offering things to do, travel, and goods and services in communities around the world.

When Groupon rolled out its employee volunteer program, volunteerism across the company exploded.

But the program quickly outgrew the spreadsheets that Groupon was using to manage it, and the company was looking to scale volunteerism even further.

That’s when Groupon turned to VolunteerMatch to grow and manage the program, and better cater to the goals of employees as well as leadership.

“As we continued to grow, I wasn’t able to plan every event for our employees. Once we realized we needed a different solution, we knew VolunteerMatch was going to be our best option. We needed to scale our program to offices across the country, and VolunteerMatch allowed us to do that. It’s been really helpful to have that vast network of opportunities for our employees to access.”

BACKGROUND

After launching its employee volunteer program (EVP), Groupon quickly experienced momentum. A couple years later, Groupon knew it needed a better way to organize volunteer opportunities across the U.S., engage its employees, and track and report on volunteer hours to show the program’s success.

CHALLENGES

  • Needed to scale the company volunteer program with ease to serve multiple Groupon offices throughout the country.
  • Wanted a more streamlined tracking solution for volunteer hours than the spreadsheets the company was using.
  • Needed more robust reporting to show team leads volunteer hours tracked, and demonstrate the program’s return on investment.

SOLUTIONS

  • Implemented VolunteerMatch, a customizable and interactive database of volunteering opportunities
  • Engaged with VolunteerMatch account managers to tailor the VolunteerMatch to Groupon’s needs
  • Encouraged employees to use the platform to get involved in their individual causes, in addition to creating major corporate causes to focus on

RESULTS

  • Expanded the scope of the EVP program across the U.S., and engaged more employees.
  • Grew volunteer hours tracked by more than 600 percent in one year, from around 2,000 hours to more than 14,000 hours logged
